Spectraglass Ltd was incorporated in 1984 by a group of people each with many years experience in the functional management of a number of differing glass manufacturing disciplines, including melting, grinding, polishing, toughening and hot work, all in small batches or large number automated production runs. The name of the company “Spectraglass” was chosen to reflect the broad spectrum of glass processing work that could be undertaken. To implement this policy the original employees in the manufacturing function were already highly skilled in producing items required by customers. As age takes over the company has a policy of continuous training for new employees regardless of age at time of joining to continue the skills base The company is based in the city of Perth that has along history of glass making stretching back over 150 years particularly in the steam and petrochemical industries where Perth manufactured glass was and still is the recognized world market leader. Many of the city residents have family connections to the glass industry. The world’s first automatic bottle making machine was invented and developed in Perth, and there are still a few in use today, after 100 years use and requests still appear for spares. The varied products produced, are sold on a worldwide basis with over 100 countries being supplied, some with as little as 10 pieces of glass, to tens of thousand pieces to the world oil industry. The quality of production is recognized by the aerospace industry, and has been evaluated and approved by major aircraft manufacturers to supply glass components for aircraft, which is the most demanding quality assurance in the world.

Research Frontiers Inc., the developers and licensors of SPD-SmartGlass™, have built an infrastructure of over 40 licensees worldwide that collectively are capable of serving the growing global demand for smart glass products in automobiles, homes, buildings, aircraft, boats and display applications. In suspended particle devices (SPDs), a thin film laminate of rod-like nano-scale particles is suspended in a liquid and placed in between two pieces of glass or plastic, or attached to one layer. When no voltage is applied, the suspended particles are randomly organized, thus blocking and absorbing light. When voltage is applied, the suspended particles align and let light pass. Varying the voltage of the film varies the orientation of the suspended particles, thereby regulating the tint of the glazing and the amount of light transmitted. SPDs can be manually or automatically "tuned" to precisely control the amount of light, glare and heat passing through, reducing the need for air conditioning during the summer months and heating during winter. SmartGlass can be controlled through a variety of mediums, such as automatic photosensors and motion detectors, smartphone applications, integration with intelligent building and vehicle systems, knobs or light switches. SPD-SmartGlass light-control technology increases a user's control over their environment, provides for better user comfort and well-being and improves energy efficiency. The technology provides over 99% UV blockage and instant switching in 1 to 3 seconds. In cars, the range of light transmission for the technology is 50-60 times darker than a typical sunroof to twice as clear as an ordinary sunroof. Published data by Mercedes-Benz shows that SPD-SmartGlass technology can reduce cabin temperatures inside a vehicle by 18°F (10°C). Other advantages include reduction of carbon emissions and the elimination of a need for expensive window dressings.
