Gemcor, an Ascent Aerospace company in West Seneca, New York, provides proven aircraft assembly automation. Gemcor’s robust, all-electric fastening line provides airframe manufacturers with a cleaner, faster, more precise and reliable system. All-electric systems are available for applications from engine nacelles to fuselage and even the largest of wing applications. And Gemcor has introduced cost-effective robots for a variety of assembly solutions, like self-contained end effector or panel positioning. Founded in 1937 by Thomas Speller Sr., Gemcor invented the automated fastening process to support aircraft production during WWII. More than 2200 Gemcor systems have been shipped since Gemcor’s Drivmatic® process quickly became an industry standard for automated aircraft assembly. Across the globe, Gemcor equipment and systems are used by virtually every manufacturer of airframes. It’s hard to find a commercial aircraft that hasn’t been touched by Gemcor. In 2016, Gemcor joined Ascent Aerospace, which integrates factory automation with aircraft tooling expertise, to provide turnkey solutions from one, vertically-integrated organization. Thomas Speller Sr. Award Established in 1983, in honor of the founder from Gemcor, the award recognizes unusual achievements of an individual who, through dedicated service, tireless efforts, high ideals, and vision, contributed significantly to the implementation of manufacturing processes and methodologies in the dedicated discipline of automated fastening machines and their applications. The award is administered by the Aerospace Automated Fastening Committee and presented each year at SAE’s Aerospace Manufacturing Automated Fastening or AeroTech Conference.
