About Us: GDS Instruments designs, develops and manufactures materials testing machines and software used for the computer-controlled testing of soils and rocks. This technology is used to evaluate the mechanical properties that are key in geotechnical and earthquake engineering design. Karl Snelling (previously Managing Director and now Chief Technical Officer) and Clayton Dodd (Global Account Director) have worked at GDS for more than 40 years. This combined experience ensures customers can expect a consistency in the GDS approach of its equipment and its support. Brief History: In 2011 GDS were awarded the coveted Queens Award for “Enterprise in International Trade”. In 2012 GDS became part of the Judges Scientific plc group of companies. Since being founded in 1979, it is estimated that GDS products have been used to help achieve 1000 Phd's. GDS products have been used in many world renowned commercial developments including the Three Gorges Dam in China, the Millau Viaduct in France, the Vasco da Gama Bridge in Portugal, Terminal Five at Heathrow and the new Crossrail links in London. In 2012 we became part of Judges Scientific - a specialist group of 20+ scientific companies. In 2025 Ian Ayling took over as MD and Karl Snelling moved into the role of Chief Technical Officer. We employ over 80 permanent staff at our offices Hampshire, UK as well as working with a network of agents spanning 40 countries. Our team includes a number of PhD's and qualified geotechnical engineers as well as specialist software designers, hardware designers and electrical/electronics specialists. This gives us the the ability to design, build and test all our machinery in house and to ship the finished products directly to customers whilst also providing extensive installation services, repairs, training and technical support.
