Our mission is to increase the public’s enjoyment and understanding of art.
When Tate first opened its doors to the public in 1897 it had just one gallery, displaying a small collection of British artworks. Today we have four major galleries and the national collection of British art from 1500 to the present day and international modern and contemporary art, which includes nearly 80,000 artworks.
Tate is a public institution owned by, and existing for, the public.
Founded in 1914, the Art Gallery of Hamilton is the oldest and largest public art gallery in southwestern Ontario. Its permanent collection, which is focused on historical Canadian, 19th-century European and Contemporary art, now numbers more than 10,000 works and is recognized as one of the finest in Canada. The AGH is a vital creative hub and centre of lifelong learning that enables people of all ages to enrich their lives by gaining a deeper understanding of art. Its renovated and award-winning premises present exhibitions that change three times a year, plus visitors can enjoy the always-tempting Shop at AGH and Horse and Train Bistro.
Mission Statement
The Art Gallery of Hamilton is a public resource dedicated to engaging, stimulating and enriching the community through art.
A New Vision
