Após a 2ª guerra mundial , Manaus era uma vila e ainda não possuia nenhuma instalação de produtos petrolíferos. Nessa época, um empresário visionário chamado Isaac Sabbá imaginou construir uma refinaria na cidade para a comercialização de gasolina, diesel e querosene. A partir da construção da Refinaria de Manaus, um dos fundadores da Fogás, Samuel Benchimol, teve a idéia de iniciar uma distribuidora de Gás LP. A Fogás foi fundada em 1956, pelos irmãos Samuel, Israel e Saul Benchimol. A primeira estratégia para conquistar a liderança de mercado, na época, foi iniciar bem cedo, de madrugada com os caminhões cheios de Gás LP para a venda (antigamente a venda de Gás LP era de porta em porta). Eram três caminhões que faziam a entrega por bairros. O posicionamento da empresa era crescer no mercado da Amazônia Ocidental. A filial de Porto Velho foi a primeira a ser construída, em 1970. Para isso a empresa importou o primeiro navio, o Fogás I, que transportava Gás LP para Porto Velho, em Rondônia. Logo em seguida, com o crescimento da empresa, houve a necessidade de a Fogás adquirir mais dois navios. A filial de Rio Branco, no Acre, foi a segunda a ser inaugurada, em 1977. A cidade de Boa Vista, capital do Estado de Roraima, foi o local escolhido para a terceira filial da empresa. A inauguração foi no dia 23 de Junho de 1995. Em 14 de Junho de 2002, a Fogás inaugurou o terminal de envasamento de Gás LP em Santarém, oeste do estado do Pará.
