In 1994, shortly after Bad Religion made the unanimous decision to leave Epitaph Records (which was owned and founded by Brett Gurewitz), Brett left the band. Brett was once again on bad terms with the rest of Bad Religion, and during his absence from the band, he rarely talked to Greg and the others. In around 1996, Greg was divorced from Greta. Greg himself has said that his unconventional upbringing had made it difficult for him to understand womem, and he partly attributed his inability to maintain his relationship with Greta to this. Greta was given custody of the couple's two children. Greg continued living in Ithaca following the divorce (although he was of course away from the town touring and recording with his band). He has a studio in his house called Polypterus Studios, which is where he recorded the demos for The Gray Race, No Substance, and The New America. He also recorded his 1997 solo project (released under the name American Lesion) at this home studio. American Lesion's self-titled album was largely a reaction to Greg's divorce from Greta; the songs were much more personal than the typical Bad Religion song, and a few songs explicitly addressed the theme of fractured relationships. In 1998, Greg brought together his love of music with his love of education by initiating the Bad Religion Research Fund. The fund yearly offers a monetary award to a deserving researcher chosen by the band. Researchers can submit their proposals to the band for review. The Fund is Greg's way of fostering the creative spirit that he truly values and extending it to the academic world. Today, Greg is still a leading member of Bad Religion. Since Brett's departure, he has been pretty much the sole songwriter in the band--writing nearly all the songs on the band's three post-Brett albums. His unique outlook on life has informed Bad Religion's philosophy since their very early years, and he is still the band's voice and vision.
