Flashes of Hope is a program of Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation that creates free uplifting portraits to honor the unique life and memories of every child fighting cancer. Flashes of Hope was founded by the parents of a pediatric cancer patient during their 18-month-old son’s first battle with cancer. They gathered a team of award-winning photographers and stylists to give a handful of young cancer patients a chance to participate in a free photo shoot. Since 2001, we have presented free photo packages to over 87,000 children and their families. Our national chapters are managed by local volunteer Chapter Directors who coordinate monthly professional photo shoots at our 120 partner hospitals and special event locations. Volunteer photographers, stylists and photo shoot assistants transform hospital floors into professional studios to photograph children with their family. Stylists carefully apply makeup, often teaching teenage girls how to re-create eyebrows lost to chemotherapy and help children and family members look and feel their best. Once in front of the camera, uncertainty gives way to joyful smiles. The family of every child photographed receives at no charge a photo package and digital prints as well as Happy Packs – gift bags with comfort and distraction items to address the monotony and isolation of an extended hospitalization.
