FIGMENT began as a free participatory arts event on Governors Island in 2007 with a simple idea: that art is something people do together, not something they consume. Nearly two decades later, that idea has produced over 80 events across 20 cities and 5 countries. Like any community-rooted organization, FIGMENT has evolved — pausing only during the years when gathering itself was impossible, and returning stronger for it. What has never changed is the energy that draws artists and participants together, or the belief that transformative cultural experiences should be open and accessible to everyone. Our mission remains what it has always been — to build community through the participatory arts, inspiring personal and social transformation through cultural experiences rooted in participation and inclusion. In 2026, FIGMENT returns with events in Boston, Toronto, and New York City, alongside FIGMENT Alpha — our experimental four-day arts festival in Darlington, MD. FIGMENT is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit incorporated in New York State.
