About DFTO
DFTO is the government’s public sector rail owning group. Its purpose is to bring all currently privately-owned train operators into public ownership in advance of the creation of Great British Railways in 2027.
The group’s current train operating companies are: LNER, Northern, Southeastern, TransPennine Express and SWR. It has over 23,000 employees.
DFTO runs over 6,000 services a day and delivers over 450 million customer journeys across its networks every year. This accounts for 26% of total UK passenger journeys and 30% of passenger miles.
We're the charity who look after and bring to life 2,000 miles of waterways across England and Wales, because we believe that life is better by water.
Our research findings are showing that spending time by water, whether it be your lunchbreak, daily commute or just a weekend stroll, really does make us feel happier and healthier.
With ever increasing rates of obesity and stress and declining mental health in the UK, we believe we are uniquely placed to make a significant contribution to improving the wellbeing of millions of people. Many of the waterways we care for run through some of our country’s most deprived and multi-cultural urban communities where access to quality green space is scarce.
That’s why, at Canal & River Trust, our passionate team are working with volunteers and communities across England and Wales to transform their canals and rivers into spaces where local people want to spend time and feel better. We know this will bring wellbeing opportunities to millions.
The new Greater Anglia franchise began operating on 16 October 2016. We provide intercity, commuter and rural services throughout Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire, including the Stansted Express service. We’re responsible for over 3,000 employees, operate 1,300 train services per day and we’re at 133 stations.
Greater Anglia is transforming the railway in East Anglia. We’re replacing every single train with brand new trains with air conditioning, plug and USB points and fast free wifi, which started to come into service during 2019. We’re introducing better timetables with more frequent services and more peak-time seats into London. Follow our transformation story at www.greateranglia.co.uk/newtrains/latest-news.
