Fairfield Foundation Information

The Fairfield Foundation, established in 2000, is an educational outreach organization providing hands-on historic preservation and archaeology experiences at five National Register of Historic Places properties in Gloucester and at other locations on Virginia's Middle Peninsula and beyond. We restore and excavate historic sites to engage students of all ages in the process of research and preservation of cultural resources to increase knowledge, support heritage tourism, preserve natural resources, and enhance quality of life. We believe hands-on experiences create tangible connections to the past and encourage follow-up discussion and collaboration. Our properties include Fairfield Archaeology Park, Timberneck at Machicomoco State Park, Walter Reed Birthplace, Rosewell Ruins, and the Center for Archaeology, Preservation and Education. Outreach includes school programs, public archaeology, workshops, summer camps, internships, fellowships, tours, and special events.
