Facebook is on a mission to eliminate a malicious software that has been plaguing the social networking site. It has come into their attention last week about the Ramnit worm, which has been spreading since April 2010. This malware has stolen login details of 45,000 Facebook users, most of them based in the United Kingdom and France. Recently, the Ramnit has been adapted to target Facebook details, which when landed in the wrong hands can steal login credentials for other services such as online banking. Unlike the traditional computer virus, a malware reproduces itself without having to attach itself to an existing program, thus enabling it to spread rapidly online. Facebook has taken actions to defend the site against this dangerous worm. "Our security experts have reviewed the data and, while the majority of the information was out-of-date, we have initiated remedial steps for all affected users to ensure the security of their accounts," a spokesperson for Facebook said. "Thus far, we have not seen the virus propagating on Facebook itself, but have begun working with out external partners to add protections to our anti-virus systems to help users secure their devices." Facebook users, wherever they are in the world, are advised not to click strange links and should report any suspicious activity.
