Extreme Spill Technology began developing its innovative technology in 2005. A global patent is now pending, and the company has embarked on a worldwide marketing strategy with the recent formation of its EST-HK subsidiary in Hong Kong, where EST's patent has already been granted. On August 26, another EST prototype successfully recovered Bunker C and diesel oils off the coast of China in tests observed by its Maritime Safety Administration (coast guard). An MSA official said he was amazed that both types of oil were collected so quickly where conventional skimmers would have failed. Industry giants PetroChina and Sinopec have since expressed serious interest. A much larger 70m version for use in the Arctic and high seas is currently in the planning stage.
