What sets Family Tree Nursery apart is our passion for plants; a passion that began 50 years ago when a young dental student followed his passion and transferred to the horticulture program at Kansas State University. Ron Nelson opened the doors of the first store at 85th Street and Farley as a wholesale growing facility providing other outlets with high-quality gift plants, like Poinsettias and Mums in 1964. This love for plants has since evolved into three retail locations; with the acquisition of the Shawnee store in 1981 and Liberty location in 1988 joining the Overland Park location. We are also proud to say in 1986 we added our growing facility, with over 6 acres of covered greenhouses to grow our award-winning mums, poinsettias, perennials, bedding plants and hanging baskets and deliver them daily to our stores. With over 100 full and part-time employees, under the helm of Ron’s son, Eric, Family Tree Nursery continues to provide superior products with the knowledge, service and experience to back it up. Our bedding plants look better because they’re grown better – we grow almost every bedding plant we sell at our own greenhouses. We travel nationwide scouting trial gardens and test sites to uncover the best varieties for our tough growing conditions and continually push to grow them bigger and better. Applewood Seed Company, a 100% employee-owned company, specializes in the production of a wide variety of high-quality, open-pollinated flower seeds. We sell bulk wildflower seeds, garden flower varieties which include heirloom flower seeds, herb seeds, and native grass seed. We carry individual species and seed mixes designed for a variety of geographic regions and specific applications.
