Gone are the days when stove-piped management of risk is sufficient. Recent events all over the globe have shown the need for a systems-of-systems and enterprise-systems approach in dealing with modern-day emerging risks. In 2009, the Emergent Risk Initiative (ERI) was established at Old Dominion University with the vision of creating the next generation body of knowledge in risk management for current and future systems and organizations characterized by uncertainty, emergence, complexity, and interdependence. Our Mission is to prepare future researchers, educators, practitioners, and entrepreneurs to the challenges of managing risks in the ever-changing global environment. We are working towards this mission through three objectives: • Translational Research - To bridge the bodies of knowledge in engineering, business, public policy, and other disciplines towards managing emerging risks • Education - To provide the highest quality learning and training contents in managing emerging risks • Outreach - To develop next generation tools and techniques for today’s risk management community Our strategy in accomplishing these objectives is to leverage the entire collective capabilities of our members in synergistic collaborations.
