EMU FLEPS Information

Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU), a state university established in 1979, educates over 15,000 students from 108 countries. Excluding students of Turkish origin, approximately 48% of the student body consists of international students whose native language is not Turkish. EMU offers more than 100 associate, undergraduate, master's, and doctoral programs with instruction in either English or Turkish. Although founded after 1974 to develop local human resources in a newly established country, EMU has prioritized internationalization since its inception, adapting to global dynamics. To support this goal, many academic programs have been taught in English since the university's establishment. Initially intended to enhance local students' interaction and communication skills with the global community, this vision expanded to include international students from various countries seeking academic education at EMU. Consequently, the development of English as the medium of instruction at EMU and the history of the Foreign Languages and English Preparatory (FLEPS) traced back to the university's early years. All language courses at the university are consolidated under the umbrella of FLEPS. Within this framework, the English Preparatory programs, operating under FLEPS, offer an intensive one-year language education. Additionally, the Foreign Languages Unit (FL), operating under FLEPS, provides various levels of language courses in English, Turkish, German, Spanish, Greek, and Russian to students who have completed the English or Turkish preparatory school education or those who directly proceed to their academic departments.
