EmstoPA is developing a targeted biologic approach to address severe bleeding associated with excessive tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) activity. Elevated endogenous tPA levels are implicated in pathological hyperfibrinolysis and significant haemorrhage in settings such as cardiopulmonary bypass surgery and major trauma. In addition, administration of thrombolytic agents including tissue plasminogen activator, tenecteplase, and reteplase to treat acute vascular occlusions can result in serious bleeding complications. Current treatments for tPA-driven hyperfibrinolysis are non-specific and of limited effectiveness. Concerns regarding haemorrhagic risk have also contributed to cautious use of thrombolytic therapy in certain clinical settings. EmstoPA’s programme is focused on a humanised antibody fragment designed to specifically reverse tPA activity and manage tPA-associated bleeding in high-risk patients.
