Imagine this; a violinist arrives at Juilliard and on their first day their violin is taken away. For the next 4 years they study music theory and only watch senior musicians play the violin. Of course, that would be ridiculous. There must be a balance between theory and practice if you are a musician in training, an athlete in training, or a clinician in training. Theory without execution is hollow learning; soon forgotten, meaningless. Scope.education is where clinicians in training from more than 30 countries train clinical reasoning through practice. But, don't add study time by incorporating practice on top of books and memorizing; replace studying with practicing, and spend less time. You are no longer a student; you are a clinician in training. Before memorizing anything, run through clinical practice scenarios that require you to employ the knowledge you think you might need to memorize. Soon enough, you will find there is no need to memorize it; you just know it, and you know how to use it. Training clinical reasoning while learning to apply the applicable science provides meaningful context to both, making the sciences and the clinical one, and indelible. Further, knowledge retrieval is context dependent. Soon, you will need to call upon your foundational sciences to solve a real problem for a real patient; so, practice using your foundational sciences in front of a patient with a problem. Patients don't come to clinic with multiple choice options written on their foreheads. Even your step exam and shelf exam performances will improve; their questions are clinical vignettes, so practice clinical vignettes. A training session, on the field, in the gym or studio, requires strong effort in order for us to become stronger. More effort, more mastery. The same is true when practicing clinical reasoning in Scope; it is work; effortful learning; desirable difficulty; it is strength training. Scope is your clinical reasoning gymnasium. Go earn it!
