Tax planning is carried out by different types of taxpayers such as individuals, family units, companies and other types of entities. The objective of tax planning, in general terms, is to optimize the taxes paid by these taxpayers, either in terms of minimizing the amount of taxes that have to be paid, or to defer the timing of when taxes have to be paid. The objective of tax planning can be achieved in many ways. Some tax planning techniques may involve domestic structures that rely purely on domestic tax rules, while others are cross border structures that rely on a combination of the domestic law of the states involved, plus international tax rules including tax treaties.
