educate. is a community-based NGO working to empower children and young people in Honduras through education. We are based in Trinidad, Santa Bárbara – an area where over 80% of the population live below the poverty line, and 50% of students drop out of school after 6th grade. We work alongside young people, families, schools and communities to create opportunities for young people to access education and grow as leaders who can shape the futures of their communities. Our programmes bring together education, sport, arts, technology, gender justice and youth leadership – from scholarships and community libraries to football clubs, STEM, youth-led journalism and sexual health programmes. We believe young people are not simply recipients of support, but leaders, creators and active participants in shaping their communities. We design our work with young people and local communities in the lead, and we create spaces where they can develop skills, build confidence, express themselves and take action. Since 2017, educate. has grown from a small grassroots initiative into a locally rooted organisation reaching over 3,000 children and young people across rural communities in Santa Bárbara each year.
