EcoRecycle Victoria Information

EcoRecycle Victoria, the State agency responsible for promoting the sustainable use of resources, has produced a draft solid waste strategy, Towards Zero Waste: A Materials Efficiency Strategy for Victoria. The document heralds significant changes to the way solid waste will be managed over the next decade. As a blueprint for change, it is aimed at supporting environmental sustainability through the introduction of improved processes and practices for using materials more efficiently and reducing waste within government, industry, commerce and households. In the past 20 years, Victoria has made major inroads to addressing the waste management challenge through recovering ever increasing amounts of materials for recycling. Despite this achievement, Victorian industries and householders still throw more than 4 million tonnes of waste into landfill each year and that figure shows no signs of abating. The strategy maintains that while recycling materials such as paper, bottles, steel and plastic contribute to a greener environment, it is only one plank in the bridge to sustainability.
