Eastlea Community School is a leading school in the Computing At School Network of Excellence. We have an on-going partnership with Microsoft and the BBC and participated in the beta test of the BBC micro:bit. The Curriculum Team has two Lead Practitioners; Mr Richards is a CAS Master Teacher and Mr White is Lead Practitioner of ICT. Eastlea has been recognised by the British Computing Society for outstanding curriculum development and teaching. In Year 7 our aim is to provide a balanced, appropriate and challenging curriculum, which allows our students to develop their potential to the fullest extent possible. Our programmes of study fully meet the legal requirements of the National Curriculum. The topics studied are Computational Thinking, Physical Computing, Handling Data and Digital literacy. These learning pathways, equip our students with the skills to develop into independent learners. In year 8 students begin to learn how to apply these Computing capabilities independently by carrying out integrated projects. The skills they learn in this year will help to equip them for further study in all subjects and for life. Year 10-11 GCSE Computer Science (Level 2): Students undertake assignments and learning activities to introduce the fundamental concepts of computer science, hardware, networks and computer programming. This builds to allow them to make an informed choice about their future options for key stage 4 and will equip them with the tools to perform "computational thinking". This will enable them to perform high level problem solving and logical analysis to many areas of life that extend beyond ICT and computers. Year 9 Financial Literacy (Level1): This qualification ensures that young people learn the skills necessary to manage their own finances. We also aim to inspire the next generation of finance and banking professionals through these courses and the IFS Student Investor Challenge, an annual stocks and shares trading game.
