The East Devonport Medical Centre was established in 1975 by Dr. Anthony Blake and Dr. Jonathan Clapton. Initially patients were seen from the granny flat under Dr Blake's home on the upper reaches of Stephen St, but space was at a premium with the hallway serving as a waiting room and a purpose built surgery was built lower in Stephen Street. The practice quickly flourished and over the next few years several more doctors joined. Dr Simon Monks was the first, followed by Dr Brynley Parry and Dr Suren Naiker. During this time period major renovations were performed which doubled the floor size of the surgery and provided extra consulting rooms as well as staff areas and a larger waiting area. At this stage the practice was fully computerised. The practice services a semi-rural/industrial community. The site of the practice is not far from a busy port and is easily found by following the signs to the "Spirit of Tasmania".
