The Institute of Engineering Thermodynamics at the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt abreviated DLR) in Stuttgart, with further research facilities in Cologne, Ulm, Oldenburg and Hamburg, does research in the field of efficient energy storage systems that conserve natural resources, and next generation energy conversion technologies with a staff of 180 scientific and technical employees, engineers and doctoral candidates. The spectrum of activities ranges from theoretical studies to laboratory work for basic research and to the operation of pilot plants. These experimental and theoretical studies are accompanied by analysis studies to analyse the associated technological, environmental and economic potential. A tight network with the University of Stuttgart -especially with the Institute for Building Energetics, Thermotechnology and Energy Storage- and with the Helmholtz Institute Ulm at the University of Ulm is existing. Das ILK ist eine Forschungseinrichtung der Fakultät Maschinenwesen und der Fakultät Verkehrswissenschaften "Friedrich List" der Technischen Universität Dresden – als Exzellenzuniversität eine der führenden Universitäten Deutschlands und Europas - und gehört zu den größten und leistungsstärksten Instituten der TU Dresden. Unsere Absolventen zeichnen sich aus durch breitgefächerte Grundlagenkenntnisse und anwendungsorientiertes Spezialwissen, insbesondere auf den Gebieten moderner Werkstoffe, Werkstoff- und Strukturmechanik, Simulation, Konstruktion und Fertigungstechnik sowie ökonomisch-ökologische Produktbewertung. Unser Forschungsspektrum reicht von der Grundlagenforschung über die anwendungsorientierte Forschung bis hin zur konkreten Innovationsentwicklung für unsere Industriepartner. Die Arbeit am ILK ist geprägt vom Dresdner Modell eines "Funktionsintegrativen Systemleichtbaus in Multi-Material-Design" und basiert auf einem werkstoff- und produktübergreifenden Ansatz. Unsere Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler betrachten bei der Entwicklung neuer Konzepte, Prozesse und Produkte die gesamte Entwicklungskette: Werkstoff – Konstruktion – Simulation – Fertigung – Prototypentests – Qualitätssicherung – Kosten. Je nach Anforderung beziehen sie alle Werkstoffklassen vom Stahl über Aluminium, Magnesium und Titan sowie Kunststoff bis hin zur Keramik entsprechend ihrem konstruktiv-technologischen Eigenschaftsprofil ebenso ein wie Composites mit Kurzfaser-, Endlosfaser- oder Textilverstärkung. Entsprechend breit ist unser Team fachlich und personell aufgestellt. Geleitet wird das ILK von einem vierköpfigen Vorstand: Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Maik Gude (Professur für Leichtbaudesign und Strukturbewertung), Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Hubert Jäger (Professur für Systemleichtbau und Mischbauweisen), Prof. Dr.-Ing Niels Modler (Professur für Funktionsintegrativen Leichtbau) sowie Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Prof. E.h. Dr. h.c. Werner Hufenbach (Seniorprofessur).
