A successful surf style business in an area where there is no surf! Just what you'd expect from the innovative 'kiwi's.' Kim Hawkins started this water sports enterprise in a small cabana-like store in the seaside village of Rowayton in 2005. In 2011 she expanded to Westport, opening a year round store that also sold surf shop merchandise, as well as kayaks, paddle boards, and associated accessories. In 2017 she added a satellite operation at Weed Beach in Darien, as well as started a variety of programs at local beach and yacht clubs. Downunder offers rentals, lessons, guided tours, yoga on paddleboards, meditation, corporate activities, kids parties and summer programs. The business closes January through March, although phone messages and email are still monitored. Downunder was created to be an empowering, fun, and energizing experience, both in the stores and on the water. It caters to ages three through seniors, and is adaptable for most disabilities. We service the local community and have a special passion for outreach programs such as Kids in Crisis, DARE, and Sober House. We are very philanthropic, and hold a fundraiser every year to raise funds for Help Our Military Heroes and organizations that provide service dogs to those in need, such as Paws for Purple Hearts.
