Documentary First Information

Documentary First is an award-winning documentary production company and filmmaker podcast dedicated to telling stories that preserve history, honor everyday people, and explore the craft and business of nonfiction filmmaking. We produce documentary films built on deep trust with our subjects and years of embedded partnership with the communities where these stories live. Our work includes The Girl Who Wore Freedom and Grueling Glory, the upcoming documentary Heroes of Carentan, and documentary series The Brave Dutch. Each project reflects our belief that the best documentaries aren’t made quickly, they’re made through relationship, patience, and a commitment to getting the story right. The Documentary First podcast is a weekly resource for documentary filmmakers at every stage. With 270+ episodes and growing, host Christian Taylor interviews directors, editors, producers, and composers behind projects for HBO, Netflix, PBS, and independent film. The companion series, The Deep Dive, unpacks the craft, business, and creative lessons behind each conversation. Together, they’ve built a global community of filmmakers, history enthusiasts, and storytellers. Documentary First is fiscally sponsored by Living Stories Ltd, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Tax-deductible donations directly support our documentary film projects and our mission to preserve stories that matter for future generations.
