We have found that bottle caps can be repurposed saving waste, providing jobs and delivering opportunities for dignified work that can raise individuals, families and potentially communities out of poverty. Each year more than 75 billion beverage bottle caps are made in Indonesia and more than 350,000 informal waste workers work in Jakarta alone. Informal waste workers still remain largely unacknowledged for their contribution to waste management in Indonesia. DJAMU partners with waste workers to create a solution for this waste product, a filament made from bottle cap waste recovered from landfill that can be woven into furniture and basket ware.
