Direction 180 is a community-based, opioid treatment program located in the North End of Halifax, Nova Scotia. This non-profit organization has been running since 2001 as a program of the Mi'kmaw Native Friendship Center. Our program was designed and implemented based upon the social determinants of health, recognizing that substance use and recovery are often dependent on a multitude of issues including; housing, mental health, income, social support networks, employment and education. Our program was founded upon the principles of harm reduction which uses a variety of strategies to reduce the risks associated with substance use. We equally respect people in our program who choose abstinence or harm reduction and offer services tailored to help clients quality of life, living conditions, mental/psychological states, and physical health. This is achieved through methadone/suboxone or other alternatives, counselling, advocacy and medical monitoring. Since our inception Direction 180 has developed and implemented over 40 health promotion, collaborative initiatives and research initiatives with the aim of improving health and social outcomes for people who use substances.
