DIGS,Inc. began as a journey by several parents, grandparents and special educators who were concerned about the lack of services for adults with developmental disabilities in the Rome/Floyd County area, Georgia. Special educators were instructed to have transition plans for students before graduating from high school and found little or nothing for students who were not ‘job ready’. Parents and grandparents did not understand how or where to apply for services such as supported employment, respite care or housing beyond living at home. The majority of students were leaving school to go home with no place to go and nothing to do.IN 2005 parents,caregivers and concerned citizens formed a 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation to Develop Independence,Growth and Security for the 'adults' in our community with developmental disabilities. Our Mission: To provide safe housing, work and leisure opportunities for adults with developmental challenges. Why is DIGS, Inc. Important? Community services using federal/state funding sources have waiting lists, funding freezes and complex rules and regulations. Choices for finding housing beyond parents’ or grandparents’ homes are limited and expensive. Competition for paid employment is great. Day services have waiting lists with no funding available. Opportunities are needed for our adults to have leisure choices with peers they can truly call friends. The number of adults with developmental disabilities who need services is increasing each year.
