The Victorian Bar is a private, voluntary, self-funded, non-profit professional association of barristers who practise in Victoria. Barristers connected to the Victorian Bar’s LinkedIn company profile are independent self-employed members of the Victorian Bar. The work of the barrister is built on the proud tradition of providing strong and independent legal representation and advice without fear or favour to all in the community. Since 1891, Victoria has had a fused or amalgamated legal profession. That is, there has been a single admission to practice as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Victoria. The terminology changed with the Legal Profession Act 2004 (Vic) to admission as an “Australian lawyer” and licensing to practise as an “Australian legal practitioner” and “local legal practitioner”. "Barrister” is defined in the Legal Profession Act 2004 (Vic) as “an Australian legal practitioner who engages in legal practice solely as a barrister”.

Welcome to the Bar Association of Queensland. The Association was established in 1903 as the professional body representing the interests of members of the Bar practising in Queensland. Whilst the scope and functions of the Association have broadened since its establishment, its primary goals of promoting the rule of law and maintaining the high ethical standards of the Bar remain in place. Since July 2004, the Association has assumed important regulatory responsibilities under the Legal Profession Act 2007 (Qld) and issues practising certificates for local legal practitioners who wish to practise as a barrister. Membership is available to all barristers practising in Queensland, to interstate barristers and to others associated with the legal profession. The Association provides a comprehensive range of member benefits and services, including regular continuing professional development (CPD) seminars, conferences, mentoring through our Readers system, and on-going professional advice and assistance.

In New South Wales, there are two main types of lawyers – barristers and solicitors. Barristers specialise in court work and advice. Their independence is vital to our system of justice. It ensures legal representation for everyone, without fear or favour. Barristers cannot form any business association with partners which might compromise, or even appear to compromise, that independence. OUR AIMS 1. Promote the public good in relation to legal matters viewed in the broadest context 2. Promote collegiality and mutual assistance amongst its members 3. Represent the interests of its members to government, the media and the community 4. Promote fair and honourable practice among barristers 5. Maintain and impose standards of professional conduct
