Der Wissenschaftsschwerpunkt Medizintechnik ist angesichts der demographischen Entwicklung von größter gesellschaftlicher Relevanz und an der Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) in ein hervorragendes Forschungsumfeld eingebettet. Ziel ist es, Lebenszeit zu verlängern, Lebensqualität zu verbessern und Kosten im Gesundheitswesen zu senken. Der Bereich der Medizintechnik bildet einen der Schwerpunkte der Friedrich-Alexander-Universität (FAU) – über 90 Professoren und Dozenten sind auf diesem Gebiet an der Universität tätig und seit Gründung des Zentralinstitutes für Medizintechnik ZiMT im Dezember 2009, in diesem institutionellen Rahmen zusammengeschlossen. Alle Aktivitäten auf diesem Forschungsfeld bündelt das Zentralinstitut für Medizintechnik ZiMT, um so das Forschungsnetzwerk im Schwerpunktbereich Medizintechnik inner- und außerhalb der Universität weiter auszubauen und für eine transparentere Außendarstellung des hoch dynamischen Bereichs der Medizintechnik an der Friedrich-Alexander-Universität zu sorgen. Das Zentralinstitut für Medizintechnik ZiMT fungiert als Schnittstelle zwischen Industrie und Wissenschaft. Zu den Kernaufgaben des ZiMT zählen somit insbesondere die Koordination der Kompetenzen der zahlreichen Mitgliedseinrichtungen sowie des ingenieurwissenschaftlichen Bachelor- und Masterstudienganges Medizintechnik an der FAU.
