The University of Latvia was founded on 28 September 1919. UL is the only classical university in Latvia, performing a leading role in development of national education system, and, furthermore, in growth of society and economy. UL has 6 faculties, 7 regional branches and 3 colleges. UL provides studies in over 100 study programmes of various levels. More than 15 000 students acquire education here, and the university staff consists of of 3 000 employees. Alma Mater experiences rapid development – at present, the UL Academic Centre is being established in Torņakalns as one of the most modern study and research facilities in Northern Europe. The faculties of natural sciences, medicine and health sciences are already located in the Academic Centre’s House of Nature and House of Science.
