Research into deep tech diversity provides some shocking statistics: ๐๐ผ In the UK, ๐ฃ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐.๐% of deep tech companies are fully female-founded. ๐๐% were fully male-founded. ๐๐ผ In 2022, ๐จ๐ง๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐.๐๐% of European VC funding went to Black founders. ๐๐ผ ๐๐% of LGBTQ+ founders feel that they have to hide their identity from investors. This ๐ง๐๐๐๐ฌ to change. Future deep tech diversity challenges include: ๐ฃ๏ธ ๐๐ข๐๐ฌ ๐ข๐ง ๐ญ๐๐๐ก๐ง๐จ๐ฅ๐จ๐ ๐ฒ ๐๐๐ฏ๐๐ฅ๐จ๐ฉ๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ: Homogeneous teams can limit perspective and develop technologies with biased or unfair outcomes. ๐ง ๐๐ญ๐๐ ๐ง๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐ข๐ง ๐ข๐ง๐ง๐จ๐ฏ๐๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ข๐ง๐ค๐ข๐ง๐ : Diverse teams are more likely to foster creativity & innovation, reducing the risk of โgroup thinkingโ. They tend to understand needs across a broader market reach too. ๐ง๐ค๐ง ๐๐๐ฅ๐๐ง๐ญ ๐ฌ๐ก๐จ๐ซ๐ญ๐๐ ๐: A lack of diverse leaders will create a domino effect, potentially discouraging others from entering the industry at all. Employee retention will be a larger issue too. The purpose of Deep Tech Diversity is to share the stories of female & diverse leaders in the deep tech sector; showcasing the positive impacts they've had and barriers that they've faced on the way. We hope to inspire future generations who are considering a career in tech innovation, but are perhaps hesitant.
