The Bondi Surf Bathers’ Life Saving Club is officially recognised as the oldest surf lifesaving club in the world. It is an Australian icon and holds an indelible position in Australian history. The primary objective of surf lifesaving was – and is – to protect the bathers who frequent our beaches through manned patrols and associated services. The Bondi Surf Bathers’ Life Saving Club was established on the 21st February 1907 at the Royal Hotel Bondi Beach by a group of like-minded bathers. The club was responsible for introducing surf lifesaving to Australia and pioneered the famous surf reel and line.

We are a family based Club and maintain strong links across the local community. Our youth development programs provide education, training, fitness and entertainment to our young members. We aim to enjoy ourselves while undertaking a responsible community service by having Sunday morning surf races, Club training and social events throughout the year. We host community based events including the Lion Island Challenge, Carols by the Sea, the Avalon Beach Surf Swim and the Mackerel Challenge. We are also strong competitors at Nippers, Open and Masters competitions at Branch, State and National Surf Life Saving Championships. We have around 1100 members including more than 225 Patrolling members, 460 Nippers and more than 360 General and Associate members.

We are committed to: appoint patrols and render all possible aid to those in distress prevent the loss of life from drowning by providing efficient life saving apparatus study and practice the surf life saving methods taught by Surf Life Saving Australia Ltd promote demonstrations and arrange classes for instruction to further the best interests of surf bathing and Surf Life Saving Australia organise and conduct carnivals and competition to assist the club in the attainment of the above objectives.
