Founded in 1997 in the basement of the Blackcomb Ski Club cabin by Tom Edstrand and Mike Perreten to provide a better way to get around campus, Landyachtz is a global leader in skateboard design and development. We believe in making quality skateboards that will improve your life. What started in a small basement has now grown to include a warehouse/head office in the East Vancouver neighbourhood of Strathcona with a retail store around the corner along a main bike route at 1146 Union St, shipping facilities in both East Vancouver and Los Angeles, and a small manufacturing facility in the Kootenay town of Kimberley, B.C. Today, Landyachtz has a global presence and has built strong relationships with important partners all over the world.
Working at Landyachtz is a unique experience. From the character of our main office, to the people you work with, and the products you get to play with, working here is more than your average job. We routinely organize after work skateboard sessions and bike rides; it’s common for someone to walk through the office a few hours before the end of the day recruiting people to come out and ride. In the winter we hold Mountain Mondays every week. As soon as Cypress mountain opens, we drive the van up to snowskate, snowboard, and ski after work on Monday nights. Anyone can hop in and ride together no matter their skill level; we never leave anyone behind!
Staff are welcome to bring their dogs to the office, and it’s not uncommon to take a short break to say hi and pet whoever’s in the office that day. On Fridays we end the week by enjoying each other’s company over beers, skate sessions out front, and ping pong. Every quarter, the entire company gets together for a day of activities on our Staff Appreciation days. Other perks of working at Landyachtz include great staff pricing on all LY products, gear budget, industry deals, fitness incentives to commute to work by bike or board, health benefits, RRSP matching, and more.
Beginning in early 1995, trying to mimic the rush of snowboarding on pavement, our shortboards got less and less playtime while we experimented with more stable wheelbases, any funky truck we could get our hands on, and pretty much any material we could put trucks on. All sorts of shapes of Baltic birch plies, solid wood, modified shortboards, and various other objects became projectiles to careen down local hills with.
Looking for a lively and precisely tuned and responsive ride, old snowboards soon found themselves reincarnated with trucks and wheels attached—awaiting more brutal methods of destruction. We played (and continue to play) with almost every board and truck available and took courses in composite and material technologies, continuing on with our quest to build a
lively board capable of skating bigger hills with enhanced
control.
September 2000 through June 2002 were dedicated to developing these boards. It was challenging. We enlisted and ended up frustrating many of the greatest minds in skateboarding and snowboarding. Determining and testing the materials was a full-time job.
Trying to get the wood and fiberglass to conform to compound contours was an affront to physics and we got sick of hearing that it couldn’t be done with curvatures as pronounced as we wanted. But done it was and the first ride made it clear that it should be done.
