DanWEC - DANISH WAVE ENERGY CENTER HANSTHOLM - was established in spring 2009. The idea behind this centre was born when incumbent climate commissioner Connie Hedegaard asked the leading researchers within the area - working at Aalborg University - "how to speed up the wave energy process in Denmark...". On these grounds, Aalborg University contacted "the best place in Denmark for waves" - Hanstholm - and followingly, several meetings involving industry representatives, politicians, business representatives etc. were held in order to find out whether people were in fact interested in the idea.
