Birmingham City University is dedicated to transforming the prospects of our learners, inspiring them to become makers and doers. We are an integral part of the city in which we are based, with courses shaped by the needs of industry and partnerships with some of the country's leading employers.
The University focuses on practice-led, knowledge-based learning, providing access to cutting-edge facilities and real-world experience. We benefit from around 50 professional accreditations and have a well-established reputation for delivering in-company training and development programmes.
Our teaching staff come from and maintain their links with industry, ensuring you are given an insight into the latest thinking. We are constantly looking for new ways to enhance the learning experience, with inspiring visiting lecturers and learning environments that are designed to replicate the workplaces you aim to enter. We even give you the chance to gain work experience in real roles around the University, through our student employment scheme.
The work undertaken by our research staff and research students is not only enriching our courses, it is literally shaping the world. In the Research Excellence Framework 2014, which measures universities’ research performance, 90% of Birmingham City University’s total submission was judged to have delivered ‘outstanding’ or ‘very considerable’ impact externally.
We have been pioneering vocational education in the city since 1843, through a series of predecessor institutions. Having achieved University status in 1992, we changed our name to Birmingham City University in 2007, reflecting our commitment to, and pride in, our home city.
With £300 million invested in our campuses, our university in the centre of Birmingham - one of the UK's biggest, youngest and most exciting cities - is a place where students thrive, make new friends and expand their horizons.
With one of the most diverse student bodies anywhere, our graduates go on to become passionate engineers, teachers, leaders, builders, nurses, paramedics, physiotherapists, business and financial entrepreneurs, food and nutrition experts, psychologists, designers, health and social care leaders, sports therapists, and digital innovators. We are also marketing, tourism, hospitality and aviation management specialists and are renowned across the world as a centre of excellence.
Our courses, taught in cutting-edge facilities, are shaped by the needs of industry and partnerships with leading employers across a wide range of sectors. In fact, we work with over 1,000 employers and organisations to build their talent pipelines and benefit students through everything from placements to guest speakers. We also work with a range of employers to provide apprenticeships in a range of areas, from healthcare and business to culinary and construction.
Our teaching staff have a wealth of expertise in their field and our student support is award-winning, including giving all full-time, UK undergraduates starting in September 2025 a free £5,000 to help with living costs, which doesn't have to be paid back. We also won at the Whatuni Student Choice Awards 2024 for having the best postgraduate and international provision in the region.
We have been pioneering vocational education in the city since 1890 and in 2002, transferred to the higher education sector. Today, we offer courses across the levels that open up opportunities for every learner.
