CyFract develops particle separation systems for water treatment and industrial water reuse. Our patented low-pressure uniflow hydrocyclone separates even neutrally buoyant particles such as algae, organics and microplastics using fluid forces alone, without membranes, filters, consumables or chemicals. Because separation is driven by shear-induced lift rather than density, the technology removes particles that conventional centrifugal and gravimetric systems cannot. Eliminating membranes and consumables removes the dominant recurring cost and failure mode of conventional treatment, enabling energy-efficient, chemical-free operation with fewer maintenance interventions and higher plant availability. The technology builds on years of research in flow optimisation, computational fluid dynamics and precision 3D printing, which together allow a level of control over hydrodynamic separation that has not previously been achievable at industrial scale. Backed by SPRIN-D funding and supported by UnternehmerTUM, the Creative Destruction Lab and the Deep Tech Alliance, CyFract has deployed two containerized pilot systems and is now running validation projects with industrial partners. Applications span municipal and industrial water treatment, food and beverage processing, data center cooling and desalination.
