British Cycling is the national governing body for cycling as recognised by the UCI – the international federation for the sport. Based in Manchester at the National Cycling Centre, British Cycling works across all levels and six disciplines of the sport (BMX, Mountain Bike, Cyclo-Cross, Road, Track and Cycle Speedway), from providing the support and encouragement people need to get riding their bikes for the first time, to being home to the hugely successful Great Britain Cycling Team.
Continued success at the highest level is inspiring a boom in participation across the nation. There have never been more opportunities to ride a bike, be it for fun or sport, and British Cycling is at the heart of this growth. British Cycling also works hard to represent cyclists’ interests at all levels, including campaigning on important issues including road safety.
As a membership organisation, British Cycling provides a suite of benefits and support to its members who currently number 130,000. All membership revenue is invested back into cycling.
Based in Bermondsey in London, Cycle Training UK (CTUK) was founded in 1998 and is a not-for-profit workers co-operative.
Our singular focus for 20 years has been to promote cycling as a form of transport. To deliver this objective we provide:
• cycle training - from Complete Beginner to Fast Commuter
• Dr Bike sessions - Public & In-house
• cycle maintenance training - from “Getting To Know Your Cycle” to City & Guilds Level 2
• physical & mental health programmes - Silver Cycling (60+), Positive Spin (people with dementia), Ride Side by Side (people with mobility issues)
• cycle promotion programmes - from events & roadshows to seminars
• driver training - for HGV, van and car drivers
We do this in order to increase people's skills, knowledge and confidence. We know that this mix of activities is the best way to help everybody to discover the joy of everyday cycling. And we mean everybody. Cycling is for everyone, whatever their age, social background, ethnic origin, level of ability or mobility.
BikeSafe is a national police led motorcycle initiative, aimed at working with motorcycle riders in a relaxed environment to raise awareness of the importance and value of progressing on to accredited post-test training. BikeSafe workshops involve an observed ride with a police graded motorcyclist or approved BikeSafe observer. With some local variation, BikeSafe workshops aim to cover: attitude, observation, cornering, overtaking, filtering, junctions, group riding, hazard awareness and the system of motorcycle control.
