Currimjee Jeewanjee & Co Ltd (CJ) Currimjee Jeewanjee and Company Limited, started operations in 1890 and grew to become a major commodity trader in Mauritius before diversifying into manufacturing and distribution in the 1950s and 1960s and into services and high technology in the closing decades of the 20th century. The business activities of CJ are organised into 5 main clusters: Telecommunication, Media & IT; Real Estate; Hospitality & Tourism; Commerce & Financial Services; and Energy. The Telecommunications, Media and IT Cluster is the largest and fastest growing one and the individual business units are investing heavily in their core competencies, mutually supporting one another and making optimum use of the resulting synergies. Mauritius Overview Mauritius is a 1800 sq km island in the middle of the Indian Ocean. The languages spoken are Kreol, French and English – in that particular order. The population of 1.3 million are diverse with 65% of Indian origin and the rest are either mixed or of African, European or Chinese descent. GDP stands at USD 16,300 per head on a PPP basis. The Mauritius economic story is close to spectacular as it emerged from independence in 1967 with sugar as its only major trade. Today’s economy is driven by textiles, tourism, financial services, ICT-- and more recently, real estate and seafood. Direct and indirect benefits from tourism remain, by far, the main driver of the economy. VAT on goods and services is 15% and the corporate and individual tax rate is a flat 15%. The country benefits from a strong welfare system where education and healthcare are provided by the state. The education system is strong – and private schools following both IB and the French Baccalaureate system are present. The overall quality of life in Mauritius is generally considered to be quite good.
