Culverhill School Information

Our pupils have a Statement of Special Educational Needs or an Educational Health Care Plan which reflect moderate to severe learning difficulties plus a range of additional needs. Our young people are taught in small classes using practical, flexible and creative approaches which take account of their preferred learning styles. Learning is broken down into small steps with lots of visual, tactile clues and opportunities for reinforcement and consolidation. We personalise the pupils' learning experiences and make them fun to ensure our young people engage and make the best progress possible. All our young people have communication and interaction difficulties and need additional support either in terms of their speech and language development or in knowing what the appropriate thing to say is in different social situations. They need help with recognising and expressing feelings appropriately and in building relationships with others. Our curriculum therefore has a strong focus on social and emotional development and well-being. Staff and governors here work closely with parents and other professionals to make the most of a child's strengths, ensure that they feel happy and safe and enable them to maximise their potential. We try to build self-esteem, resilience, confidence and independence in an atmosphere where everyone is valued and success is always celebrated. At KS4 we offer a range of accreditation but also aim to enable pupils to acquire the life skills that they will need to access independent living and work. We ensure that all pupils have a college place to go onto when they leave us at the end of Year 11. Admission to Culverhill is via the case advisory panel at South Glos following a review of a child's statement or EHCP.
