Agriculture doesn't get second chances. When a variety fails in the field, the loss is real for growers, for the supply chain, for the sector. The genetics have to be right before they ever reach a farm. The Crop Development Centre (CDC) at the University of Saskatchewan has been doing that work since 1971. Over 55 years, we have released nearly 600 commercial varieties across spring wheat, durum, barley, oat, flax, pea, lentil, chickpea, canaryseed, dry bean, fababean and soybean. Our breeding programs are recognized across Canadian farms and in international markets. CDC is the only institution in Canada that carries crop innovation through the complete continuum: research, breeding, testing, training and commercialization within a single connected system. We follow the work all the way to field performance. As a public institution, we invest in crops, regions and long-term priorities that private systems often cannot justify but that agriculture depends on. We work with seed growers, licensees, commodity groups, government funders and industry partners who need innovation that holds up in real conditions. Discovery becomes performance.
