The Crayon Initiative is a non-profit organization dedicated to recycling used and unwanted crayons to preserve our environment and enrich the lives of hospitalized children through art and imagination.
Through our work, we have helped keep more than 150,000 pounds of crayons from going into landfills. Used crayons do not biodegrade but create a waxy sludge in landfills. The Crayon Initiative gives these discarded crayons new purpose by remanufacturing them into ergonomically shaped crayons and providing them to hospitals at NO COST to them. These crayons may be a patient’s only outlet for creative expression as children use drawings to reflect their hospital experiences.
Unfortunately, most hospitals don’t have the budget to provide art therapy programs. The Crayon Initiative fills that gap while having a positive impact on the environment.

The Crayon Project is based in Bridgewater, Massachusetts and was founded by Beth Ann and Kevin Bligh as a response to various acts of social injustice taking place in the world. Instead of sitting by idly while this was going on, Beth Ann and Kevin decided to start The Crayon Project focusing on the small act of buying multicultural crayons, markers and colored pencils for schools and non-profit organizations they were familiar with within their local community. As friends and families started to learn more, the outreach broadened and in just a few short months The Crayon Project grew from a grassroots organization into a fully recognized 501c3 non-profit organization.
The Crayon Project’s mission is to reinforce that hatred is not inherited; it is something that is learned. It’s time that we as a society reinforce with children that it doesn’t matter what skin color you are; you are a human being and worthy of respect and dignity.
Through the generosity of individual donors chipping in donations small and large to businesses that have rallied around the mission of The Crayon Project, we have been able to continue to spread our message across the United States and internationally, as well.
We love having you as a part of The Crayon Project and thank you for joining us in driving inclusion and equality within classrooms and non-profit organizations.
