Coro Innominata is a Sydney-based chamber choir promoting performance excellence, particularly in the area of sacred choral music. The choir was formed in the early 1990s by singers from a number of larger choirs wishing to explore acapella and chamber choir repertoire. Under the directorship of David Vivian Russell, it developed an emphasis on the sacred repertoire of the 15th-17th centuries. Baroque highlights have included Handel's Messiah, Alexander's Feast and Dixit Dominus, Purcell's Dido & Aeneas, Come Ye Sons of Art, Welcome Odes and the Funeral Sentences, Scarlatti's Stabat Mater and the motets of J.S. Bach. Renaissance highlights have included Victoria's Tenebrae Responses, Allegri's Miserere and the works of Schütz, Palestrina, Byrd and Tallis, including Spem in Alium. From the modern era the choir has performed Britten, Pärt and works by its own choristers. Under the directorship of Marcus Hodgson the choir continued to develop a varied repertoire with performances of Victoria's Requiem, Handel's Chandos Anthems and more of J.S Bach's motets and cantatas, whilst also venturing into new territory such as the music of Francis Poulenc, music of the Americas and secular repertoire from France and the UK. The choir stages a number of concerts each year and has performed in some of Sydney's finest acoustic venues such as Kincoppal Chapel, Rose Bay; St Francis Church, Paddington; and its main performance venue St Scholastica's Chapel, Glebe. It sings on occasion at church services, weddings and other functions, including the weddings of 11 of its choristers. In addition to its regular concerts Coro Innominata has appeared at numerous Sydney-based festivals, including the Spring Writers Festival, the 2000 Olympic Festival of the Arts, the Glebe Music Festival and the 2008 World Shakuhachi Festival. In 2002, members of Coro Innominata joined a tour of England singing with Sydney Philharmonia at 'The Proms' and the choir has also appeared at Carols by the Cauldron at Sydney Olympic Park, Carols at Darling Harbour and Contempo at the Art Gallery of NSW.
