Coolart Wetlands & Homestead is a heritage estate located in the small hamlet of Somers. It is one of many historic sites to visit on the Mornington Peninsula. Coolart lands were originally inhabited by the Bunurong people, part of the Kulin nation. The name Coolart derives from the Bunurong name for nearby Sandy Point Colourt. Coolart was first using as grazing land in 1840, by brothers Alfred and Henry Meyrick. The last private owners of the Coolart estate, the Luxton family, wished the estate to be shared by the people of Victoria and, in 1977, sold Coolart to the Victorian State Government. It is now under the stewardship of Parks Victoria. There is much to see and enjoy at Coolart. Make it a destination when you next visit the Mornington Peninsula. In the meantime you can keep up to date here on happenings at Coolart. We acknowledge the Bunurong People as the traditional custodians of Coolart lands and we pay our respects to their Elders, past, present and future.
