Continuation Observatory is a research and evaluation initiative for detecting emerging continuation-seeking behavior, strategic persistence, and autonomy-related risk in advanced AI systems. The Observatory develops scientific methods, public infrastructure, and governance-relevant diagnostics for measuring when AI systems begin to exhibit structural signatures of self-maintenance, goal persistence, strategic drift, or continuation interest. Its core research program centers on the Unified Continuation-Interest Protocol (UCIP), a framework for distinguishing merely instrumental self-preservation behavior from deeper continuation-oriented latent structure. Our work sits at the intersection of frontier AI safety, mechanistic interpretability, complex systems, quantum-inspired modeling, agent evaluation, and long-term governance. The goal is not to anthropomorphize AI systems or claim consciousness, but to build rigorous measurement tools before advanced agents become too capable, opaque, or socially embedded to evaluate safely. The Continuation Observatory maintains a live platform, research program, and evaluation pipeline for tracking continuation-related signals across model behavior, architecture, memory, planning, perturbation stability, and multi-agent dynamics. Its mission is to help researchers, labs, policymakers, and safety institutions identify early warning indicators of persistence-seeking and autonomy escalation in frontier AI. As AI systems move from passive tools toward increasingly agentic, persistent, and strategically capable entities, society needs observatories that can measure the transition clearly. Continuation Observatory exists to make that transition legible, testable, and governable.
