Continuation Observatory Information

Continuation Observatory is a live public research and evaluation platform for structural measurement and telemetry across frontier AI systems. The Observatory develops falsifiable methods for detecting continuation-seeking behavior, strategic persistence, self-maintenance, autonomy escalation, and other emerging risks and capabilities. Its central research program, the Unified Continuation-Interest Protocol (UCIP), tests whether continued operation is merely instrumental to a task, reward, or context—or reflects a more persistent system-level continuation interest. By varying those conditions and measuring what changes and what endures, UCIP turns AI self-continuation behavior into comparable governance telemetry across models, agent architectures, and deployment contexts. The broader research program spans frontier AI alignment, risks and capabilities, national-security benchmarking, self-improving autonomous systems, recursive self-improvement, autonomous cyber operations, and population-scale agent dynamics. Evaluation integrates behavioral evidence with structural analysis of agent trajectories, memory, planning, perturbation stability, and multi-agent dynamics. Published work includes evaluation methods, experimental results, incident analysis, and policy-relevant interpretation. The Observatory’s standard is empirical: define the behavior, specify the test, report the evidence, and distinguish measured results from interpretation. The mission is to make emerging transitions in frontier AI capability, persistence, and autonomy legible, testable, comparable, and governable before advanced systems become too capable, opaque, persistent, or socially embedded to evaluate safely.
