The University of Notre Dame is the premier global Catholic research university in the U.S. and a force for good since 1842
It offers an outstanding undergraduate and graduate education guided by a Catholic mission.
The United States Institute of Peace is a premier peacebuilding organization. Congress founded USIP in 1984 as an independent nonprofit corporation dedicated to promoting peace by preventing, mitigating and resolving violent conflict abroad.
For over 40 years, USIP has provided those working for peace with proven approaches, practical policy research and a platform to convene diverse stakeholders. Because of USIP’s independent, nonpartisan status, it is a trusted intermediary and neutral interlocutor, able to convene and facilitate global peacebuilding efforts.
USIP’s staff work at the Institute’s Washington, DC headquarters and on the ground in some of the world’s most dangerous regions. In pursuit of its mission, the Institute:
- Develops tools and resources based on research and offers expert trainings for peacebuilders, including U.S. and foreign peace negotiators, mediators, diplomats and others so they are better equipped to work together to end destabilizing conflicts.
- Designs field-tested peacebuilding plans, analysis and strategic gaming exercises for U.S. and foreign practitioners.
- Serves the public by connecting them with resources on America’s role, heritage and commitment to peace.
- Sends peacebuilding specialists to work with counterparts around the world to reduce conflict and advance peace.
In connection with its research, education and training activities, USIP hosts and engages with a range of stakeholders who are committed to working for peace or learning about nonviolent resolution of conflict, including members of Congress, religious leaders, students, veterans, and leaders from around the world.

Our Mission
Nonviolent Peaceforce is a global civil society organization. We protect civilians in violent conflicts through unarmed strategies. We build peace side by side with local communities. We advocate for the wider adoption of these approaches to safeguard human lives and dignity.
Our Vision
We envision a world in which large-scale unarmed civilian peacekeeping using proven nonviolent strategies is recognized as a viable alternative in preventing, addressing, and mitigating violent conflicts worldwide. Our primary strategy for achieving this vision is the creation of space to foster dialogue.
Our Work
We most often respond to invitations by credible local organizations committed to nonviolent solutions. Once invited, we meet key players, including commanders from opposing sides, local police, religious, business, and civil society leaders. We live and work in communities within conflict zones alongside local people.
When violence erupts, civilians under threat often contact us. They know and trust us. We have been living among them. Visibly nonpartisan and unarmed, we arrive in NP uniforms, with NP vehicles, letting our presence be known.
Our activities have ranged from entering active conflict zones to remove civilians in the crossfire to providing opposing factions a safe space to negotiate. Other activities include serving as a communication link between warring factions, securing safe temporary housing for civilians displaced by war, and providing violence prevention measures during elections.
