At Common Sense Advisors, we utilize a series of in-house indicators that are designed to help us identify when the markets are trending and when that trend is breaking down. That's because we realize that the highest probability of making money in volatile markets is to only invest when the markets are trending AND to invest with that trend. This morning (4/19/2011), our indicators continue to flash the red light and are pointing to a confirmed down trend in the major indexes. The following chart shows that the S&P 500 broke an up trend in late February, had a short retracement down and then resumed it's up trend. That up trend began to falter around the end of April with the S&P 500 unable to move above the 1340 market thus continuing the lower highs/lower lows pattern that began when the up trend was broken at the end of February. Now, the downtrend is becoming more apparent. The next line of support appears to be in the 1285 range and 1249 below that. We continue to hold off placing additional trades right now in the S&P type companies and are keeping our clients portfolios in a conservative position. We continue to have some short positions in the S&P 500, the Russell 2000 and the Japan Nikkei. We have some long positions in gold, silver and some metals/mining companies, although we sold one metals company position yesterday. We are looking for opportunities in the Gold and Silver markets.
