Walnut Grove Farms is a family farm based in the community of Schochoh, KY, 50 miles north of Nashville, TN. The farm is currently managed by the 5th and 6th generations of the Halcomb family and operates in 2 Tennessee counties and 4 counties in Kentucky. Production includes corn, soybeans, wheat, barley, and rye. The corn crop goes into distilled spirits, ethanol, pet food, or poultry feed. The majority of the soybean crop is crushed for vegetable oil, Bio Diesel, and soybean meal. The wheat crop is delivered to Siemer Milling Co. in Hopkinsville, Ky and used primarily for cracker, cake, and biscuit flour. The barley is either malted for the distilling and brewing industries or goes into feed for livestock. The rye goes into the distilling and brewing industries or is planted for winter cover crop on fallow land. Walnut Grove's soils are primarily silty clay loams with limestone bedrock and 2%-6% slopes. Though 50" of annual rainfall is typical, 2% organic matter and hot dry summers make moisture a concern. A key focus of Walnut Grove Farms is increasing sustainability through improved agronomic practices and effective utilization of Precision Ag technologies. To this end Walnut Grove has implemented zone soil sampling, variable rate seeding, variable rate P & K application, as well as variable rate liquid Nitrogen application on small grain. Technologies like these and conservation efforts such as continuous no-till and cover crops are improving fertility, increasing water holding capacity, and helping control input costs. Always on the lookout for new opportunities Walnut Grove has experimented with energy crop production, has grown canola, grain sorghum, non-GMO waxy corn, and is a Pioneer seed bean supplier. In recent years Walnut Grove has been experimenting with irrigated crop production and won the National Corn Grower's Kentucky irrigated corn yield contest in 2012, 2014, & 2015 with 311, 344, & 304 bushels per acre, respectively.
