Collusion has produced a disc of inspiration, imagery and energy in their first release for Move Records, In Depth. An enticing melting pot of influences, In Depth is comprised entirely of music written in the last twenty years. Jewish klezmer music, disco back-beats and the exoticism of Arabia and far away lands sit comfortably beside works inspired by minimalism and dance, unified by the fresh approach of this young group and the vital conviction of their intentions. Perhaps of most interest in terms of the repertoire chosen is the group's commitment to supporting Australian, and up-and-coming young Australian, composers. Four such works on In Depth have been recorded for the first time for commercial release. A very polished and almost cinematic work, Chamber Concertino, by young composer Steven Baker shows great promise, as does Tom Adeney's setting of the Danish text Sommer I Gurre. Paul Stanhope's Sea Chronicles for soprano and string quartet is a simply stunning work and a welcome addition to the recorded repertoire. Stanhope describes the performance as a "beautifully-shaped interpretation of my Sea Chronicles. Collusion perform with precision, verve and great aplomb. Similarly, Gerard Brophy's quirky Sheer Nylon Dances, complete with grand piano enhanced with rubber window stoppers, is a real treat. Brophy was "particularly delighted with this superb performance".
