CoderDojo WA Information

CoderDojo WA is a Western Australian branch of CoderDojo – a worldwide, open-source, volunteer-led movement oriented around providing free coding clubs (Dojos) for young people aged 7-17 (Ninjas). At its most simple, a Dojo is an independent informal club where Ninjas get together to learn, have fun, and make projects using code. The organisers of each Dojo may plan some activities for the Ninjas. This could include learning some basics of computer science, taking part in social activities, joining hands-on demonstrations of technology, learning how to use some programming languages and gaining experience in developing websites, apps, programs, games and more. A Dojo is more of a club than a class, and Ninjas can expect to have some free-time at a Dojo which they can use to work on their own projects. Ninjas can get some assistance with their projects from Mentors and meet like-minded people. This makes learning to code a fun and sociable experience. In a time when we are relying on computers and technology more than ever, we are facing a world-wide shortage of people with coding skills. By providing fun, free and social learning environments that motivate young people to get coding and collaborate with each other, we are setting them up to become creators, rather than consumers of technology. CoderDojo WA was founded in 2013 by the Fogarty Foundation in order to support the development of a highly digitally literate workforce that will drive WA’s future prosperity.
